This edition of "This Shit Bothers Me" is dedicated to the few things that annoy me about Vloggers. Now don't get me wrong I love vlogs, and vloggers and the video magic they create. I aspire to be one, and some of my good friends are amazing vloggers, and this blog is in no way about them. But nothing is perfect...so as much as I love vloggers, there are some things they do that bother me.
In the wake of the Chris Brown/Rihanna abuse scandal, this first irksome phenomenon became an overwhelming annoyance. And that was the vloggers who began their videos with this cringe inducing utterance "I wasn't going to talk about this but"...UGH!!! These videos made me crazy. It's like they're trying to be above it all, when they know they really were just as riveted as most of us were as the details became clearer. It irks me when they pretend to be too cool for such sensational commentary. Puh-leaze!!! Or better yet they say they're so over with certain subjects but three vlogs later they're again discussing it. I wish they'd realize that we want to hear your commentary on the utter foolishness and trumfoolery you feign ambivalence for.
Another irksome practice of vloggers is these long ass blogs about nothing. Long...anything over 7 minutes becomes torture for my borderline ADD ass. Who do you think wants to hear you talk for 10 minutes about nothing. Don't get me wrong...I've seen some 10 minute videos that had me glued to my monitor. If the subject matter is insightful or entertaining and the delivery is engaging, then I'm there. But many videos are lacking these components. And for those vloggers who start your videos with "I didn't have nothing else to do" or "I was bored so I decided to make a video" and then continue with 6 minutes of nothing...for you jokers, I'm going to ask you to take a damn seat.
For me YouTube is this symbiotic relationship between those who make videos and those who watch the videos. Symbiosis is when two beings coexist together for their mutual benefit… no one greater than the other but equal. The vloggers make the video's to inform and entertain. And the viewer or subscriber provides the vlogger with an audience and gives feedback regarding what they're viewing. This relationship is placed out of balance when those who make the videos decide to disable comments. The viewer gives you an attentive audience, but when it’s time to comment or give their opinion then the door is closed on the subject. That seems to me a bit unfair and one sided, and slightly arrogant. Disabling the comments sends the message that my opinion or view on this matter is the only one that matters.
Lastly, but certainly not least, but in fact this is probably the one that bothers me the most. It’s this small phrase that even some of my favorite Youtubers have said and each and every time it makes me crazy. It's the phrase "It's just YouTube!" I hate this statement so much...it’s just teeming with superiority and self-importance. It's like by saying that if you're bothered by something on YouTube then you're somehow overly invested, or concerned. Like it only takes a few seconds to do these sometimes very elaborate videos. "It's just YouTube! I don't really think about making new videos. It's just YouTube! Making videos don't take up a good chunk of my time. It's just YouTube!" And for those vloggers who say they really don't spend a lot of time thinking about making videos, coming up with topics, or editing. To them I say "Trust me boo boo we know, and it shows". Saying "It's just YouTube" is dismissive and insulting, and I wish it would stop.
