I was listening to some of my favorite Diva's last nite...you know...a lil Jill, some Erykah...threw in a little bit of Anita! This got me thinking about who are my favorite diva's. So I started making a list of my top 5, which then ballooned into 25. So after careful thought and consideration...I narrowed it down to 10. It was tough, because I love so many genres of music. Certain names you will not see on my list and trust me these omissions are intentional. Some are talented, but they just don't move me. So no MiMi, Brandy, Whitney and for damn sure you won't find no Beyonce. Sorry! So I'll first give you my 6-10.
10. Ledisi
9. Sarah Vaughn
8. Nancy Wilson
7. Anita Baker
6. Sade
And now my Top 5 Diva's
5. Teena Marie- She's a singers singer. She just opens her mouth and makes it seem effortless and amazing. And like all the rest of my Top 5, her voice is unique and immediately recognizable. No one sounds like Teena!
4. Patti Labelle- This one is a given. I'm sure she'd be found in most peoples Top 5. She can sing her face off and isn't afraid to put her everythin into a performance. If the spirit moves her, she'll kick her shoes off or roll around the stage. Love her!
3. Jill Scott- Jill can sing about waking up in the morning and what she ate for breakfast and make it sound good. Griiiiiiitttsss!!!! She can make you feel what she felt. I still wanna meet that damn Rasool! She is the REAL THING!!!
2. Erykah Badu- An amazing voice! Her music is raw and honest and real, and that's something quite rare in today's prepackaged, cookie cutter artist.
1. Phyllis Hyman- For those who know me, this is not a suprise, but Phyllis speaks to me. And when your Diva can do a fucking whistle solo, then maybe I'll reconsider, but until then, Phyllis is the queen!!! Gone too soon.
So who's your top 5?
Oh yes. This is it for sure.
ReplyDeleteTeena marie i loved since i was 4, having fallen in love with her Starchild album cover my dad used to spin.
two years later i was to do a mini performance for parents and co ( c'mon child dance, ya'll know the drill) of Patti, facial movements oh so included!
Anita has always given me the best that she got, hands down. i was feelin it before i knew what she was singing about.
I gotta admit, i slept on phyllis, but i loved her album covers as well( i used to take them from my dad to draw her). Loved her style, later loved her music as well in my teens.
do you know who Jill Scott ee ah??? She made going to the store to buy some thangs for ya man a wake up call. Now can I get a AMON!!!??
Dani girl, ya can slap me if ya wo-na, but doesn't Erykah Badu look like PORCELAIN? Porce she does, she really does! My eyes may not be green but i still eat alot of vegetables!
Where in F*CK is MARY J???????????????
ReplyDeleteI think Mary lives in New Jersey...thanks for your comment!
ReplyDelete1.Brandy-(I think you already know that)Her harmonizing voice always captivates my mind and takes me somewhere, "never say never" and "full moon" are two albums I absolutely adore...she is my daily dose of inspiration and motivation, I truly love this woman!!!
ReplyDelete2.Jill Scott- Love this woman, no words can explain her talent and music and that voice!!! Yesss THAT voice!
3.Erykah Badu- Another artist who captivates my mind and takes me higher!! Her uniqueness in music and appaearance is always a plus in my book!!
4.Mariah Carey- I have loved this woman since I was a child so she kinda has always been instilled in me and I naturally just support her now, through all her ups and downs
5.Whitney Houston- I feel the same with her as I feel towards "MiMi"
**SIDEBAR**Notice I did not put Beyonce on my top 5 diva list I think I am just tired of her right now, I love her albums but Beyonce got me all divad OUT! She just needs to have a seat right now in my opinion, but she is a DIVA!!! Oh yea and I am ready for the movie obsessed, finally a movie without all the music
5. Janet Jackson: You can't help but like that sexy style! Not the most powerful in the vocal range dept, but a whole side package that is to be reckoned with. She is a Jackson...WTF else do you say LMAO!
ReplyDelete4. Mariah Carey: She captured my heart the same time as JJ. When I was really young, and is nostalgic to my youth. Free-Spirited & Fun hearted keeps her in my top 5!
3. Stephanie Mills: Don't play with my Stephy! That little bitch opens her mouth, and plays with vocal power and range many top divas couldn't try to match!
2. Gladys Knight: There is something about Gladys that I just always look & tip my hat to. I love her down-to-earth persona, and soulful voice.
1. I have a lot more, but if I had to tip my hat to someone who captures everybody's respect. Not the BEST vocal performer, but moving Pastor Shirley Ceasar! Even though she never crossed over from Gospel what DIVA will not pay homage to the lady who first capture my heart as a child Shirley Ceasar!
Oh & Ro I take that as a compliment because i do love me some Erykah... She didn't make my top 5, but she is on my list... I love her back!
